Mounting an online storage service as a virtual drive on your computer
Online file storage service offering the ability to store large amounts of data there are several online and are often in fierce competition among them, which does nothing but please us because this has the effect that they are priced very low if not free addirittuta increasing amounts of space! ![]()
Have the possibility to store certain types of files online is normally at least two advantages for the user:
- reducing the space occupied on 'hard drives
- ability to access data stored remotely from any computer connected to the Internet.
In contrast, however, has, in my opinion, a considerable disadvantage in the factor "usability": even if the web interfaces of storage services as they are studied and designed to be very simple to use, however, each have its own system of authentication and different ways of delivering their functionality.
Consequently, the user, for his part, whenever it decides to join a specific service, must always have an initial phase of learning and familiarization with the specific functionality at the interface. Furthermore, as online services, the entire operation is based on the use of Web-based console that obviously require the use of a browser to handle the operations of uploading and downloading files (which is not always convenient).Gladinet is a free software and not overly intrusive, once installed on your computer, you can provide a new mode of homogeneous access to different online storage services based crezioane a virtual drive that allows you to manage remote files as if they were physically present on your computer. The advantages of this approach are easy to understand:
- After setting up access to remote services with Gladinet no longer need to authenticate with each access;
- transfer files becomes manageable through simple actions of "Cut & Paste" as in the ordinary course of managing files and folders in Windows;
- arrangements for access to different storage services become absolutely identical regardless of the service used and therefore there is nothing new to learn
Gladinet is currently in beta, and supports the following storage services online:
- Google Docs
- Amazon Storage
- Google Picasa
- Windows Live Skydrive
For example, if you want to mount the virtual drive Gladinet your documents stored on Google Docs, you simply select the "Mount disk storage or web storage as virtual Drive":
Then enter the details of your Google Docs:
Finally, once you have confirmed your details to log on, you will get a finest "Managing Resources" Windows on a new virtual drive identified by a letter assigned by the operating system (in my case "Y") that allows you to manage your remote documents just as they were stored locally:
