Last weekend I decided to give a purpose to an old PC (Pentium III with 128MB RAM and 30GB HD) on which a few months ago I installed Ubuntu Server 6.0.6.
As always what I was missing was an offline test environment that allowed me to try the changes and new features to be added to my site not make them hot, I needed to install and configure Apache2, MySQL and PHP5.

In order to give a strong push virtualization techniques and make them a mass phenomenon, VMware has recently changed its policy to distribute the software and begin to distribute free of charge its product, known as VMware Server is a light version called VMware Player .
The main difference between the server and the player is essentially in the fact that the latter is only able to start a virtual machine pre-existing and pre-configured while the server version enables the creation and installation from scratch, with the possibility of changing the hardware parameters of the virtual machine.
But since the site already exits VMware also a section on "Virtual Appliance" that makes available a large amount of virtual machines ready for use, and because of me when I have special needs and I wanted to opt for 'installation simple player that also is lighter and less intrusive.
So I downloaded the setup file of VMware Player (at the time of writing this is VMware-player-1.0.1-19317.exe) and the zip file containing the virtual machine of Ubuntu 5.10 Linux.
After the download is completed, I simply run the setup and unzipped the zip, VMware Player, only when required to indicate the position of the virtual machine to be started and the game is done: I was able to boot a Linux operating system within Windows XP thanks to the power of VMware's virtual machine! Think about that for network connectivity I have not had to do absolutely nothing: VMware automatically installs a virtual network adapter that is configured in bridging with the existing physical PC.
